What is Pregnancy Massage - is it safe?

Pregnancy massage is a specialist gentle and soothing massage, specifically tailored to the mother-to-be. As the term ‘pregnancy massage’ simply is any massage techniques used on a person who is pregnant, it can vary enormously in what it consists of specifically.

The NHS states that pregnancy massage is one of the safe therapies you can use during your pregnancy. However, it is important you choose a provider with a Pregnancy Massage certification to ensure they are competent in their skills.

There are some people who should avoid pregnancy massage such as those considered at high risk of placental abruption or premature labour. If you are in doubt about whther pregnancy massage is safe for you; speak to your midwife. GP, or obstretician.

How does Pregnancy Massage work?

During pregnancy, the body goes through many changes: a pregnancy massage will be mindful of these changes.  The long slow strokes of a pregnancy massage can give you the well-deserved time to relax, and reduced aches and pains that your ever changing body puts upon you.

It also works somewhat similar to MLD in that the massage helps to reduce fluid and swelling, especially in feet and ankles.

Can Pregnancy Massage help me - and what should I expect?

If you are someone who is pregnant – pregnancy massage can be massively beneficial. Especially in the third trimester, it can alleviate many aches and pains – specifically in the back, the belly and the feet.

You can expect a thorough chat before you hop onto the bed for your massage. Your therapist needs to be sure on what positions you are or aren’t comfortable in; for example you are unlikely to be lying on your stomach like you would in a “typical” massage treatment.

You will be made comfortable on the plinth, likely on your side, with extra cushions and towels to ensure you are comfortable. Plenty of towels are provided for modesty draping.
